In this space, we will clear some of the doubts that you might have regarding how an email client software works –

Email client software is basically used to send and receive emails. There are two basic types of email clients – Stand Alone and Web Based. Examples:

  • Stand Alone email clients – Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Pegasus etc.
  • Web Based email clients – Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo

So, how does an email client software work?

The email client software comprises of a server that the clients connect to. This server has a list of email addresses where you can send emails on that particular server. Besides this, there are other things that are required in your email software, like,

  • An email software installed on the computer
  • A SMTP server that uses port 25, for outgoing emails
  • A POP server that uses port 110 or an IMAP server that uses port 143. This helps the incoming of emails.

The difference between POP servers and IMAP servers is –

    • POP servers download messages on your desktop and do not save a copy on the server. When mails are downloaded from the POP server, they become 'local'.
    • IMAP servers save copies of the messages on the server and you can download them on your desktop.
